Use the most L1.& L2 cache you can, I will buy the Q 9550 (12mb).
Put on a mobo with 45 or 48 chippset.
DDR3 is a dead horse, 8-12GB of DDR2 will suffice.

Well I prefer the i7 since its the latest CPU that came out and has 8 cores which is prefect for multitasking which i do a lot, but you said "but I believe the extra 8gb or ram will come in real handy when it comes to virtualization." then get the Quad core, since it might come in handy later on, but, if you get the i7 you can still add on more ram.

well if i where you i wouldget the quad core thats what is much better and it has 16gb so thats good.

I would go with the "Quad Core (q9400) with about 16 gb of DDR2 ram" simply because your gonna need a fair amount of ram to run 8 copy’s of XP all at once while doing other web browsing and stuff on each one.

go for i7 its very good for virtualization as it is very powerful and speedy to do such things…..
the processor is really very strong and the latest one to do such works properly …..
