Your best bet for a good gaming OS will be Windows 7 Home Premium… Ultimate isn’t really geared towards gaming.

The only difference between Vista Ultimate and Vista Home Premium is that you can encrypt the hard drives for data safety in Ultimate. The majority of people out there don’t need this.

As for Windows 7, it will be the same thing.

Games tend to run better on 7 than Vista, because the code base for 7 uses less system resources, which improves program performance.

Windows 7 will be better for games.

There’s no advantage to doing the Ultimate version, however. Most people shouldn’t need anything beyond Professional. There’s no difference in performance, just a couple features.

You don’t need Windows Vista or Windows 7 Ultimate unless you want your computer to be a Domain, have remote desktop (you can get a free remote desktop for home, http://www.teamviewer.com), Microsoft’s BitLocker Drive Encryption, Windows Fax, and other business software. If your computer is not a Domain and you don’t need any or need only few of the microsoft business software, then why pay more? I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I play games with it, which works. I pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium. One thing that I am disappointed that it does not have an automatic back up, but I have an automatic backup from a 3rd party software that comes with a DVD player. Check out this review below which should tell you all you want to know!
Win 7 for the moment still seems to tie with Vista. But then again it hasn’t hit the market quite yet, and I hope we are talking about 64 bit btw!
I also don’t have a clue as to what kind of system you have as well, so that of course will affect performance.
