Just purchased a new laptop and can't get it to access the internet?
I’ve just purchased my first laptop computer today and I’m having trouble accessing the internet. It’s an HP G60-440US. I’m using a fairly old D-Link wireless router. I’m thinking the problem might be that it is not compatible with today’s wireless internet technology. I believe the router was bought in 2004(ish). Whether this matters or not I’m not sure. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

kk
if it isn’t compatible, it wouldn’t work and you’d have to choose your network from the network connector first and type in the password for your router before you can use it.
go to the DCOS and type run iexplorer.exe
Problem Solved.
Or if you wanna get complicated, theres an icon on your desktop.
my guess is you need to buy a new wireless router and plug it into your computer.
do you have the wifi on the laptop turned on? that is generally the issue
I bet it’s the router. Most wireless cars that come with computers are B/G/N compatible. I would either call and make sure that’s what it is, or go buy a real cheap B/G/N router.
If that’s the case, you’re going to need a new one anyways.
first, that’s not ‘wireless internet technology’, you’re talking about wifi, local networking wirelessly. the other is a service you get from your wireless provider.
second, is your wifi turned on on your laptop? it’s not by default on any laptop i’ve seen. (they are backward compatible as in a/b/g/n, but you may need to adjust settings like wep/wpa/wpa2…)
third, is it configured/set-up? as in have you run your network wizard? if it’s vista, it should do this pretty well.
need more info…
I think you should buy an up-to-date wireless router, like NETGEAR.
i got a HP laptop and connected 2 it wireless. umm it doesn’t matter what year the router was purchased in.. if it worked with ur old pc/laptop then it should work fine with the new one.. you just have 2 configure it onto ur laptop using the cd or usb stick that came with the original router.. or like connect 2 it using the password and security things. if all that doesn’t work call the place you got the laptop from and the costumer service should guide you through how to do it step by step.
Good luck xXx
Today’s computers are b/g or b/g/n. Your router is either b or b/g. The computer will work with it. (I’m using a Linksys of about the same vintage, and it’s going to be kept in use until it dies of old age. 54mbps is going to be enough for at least 10 years – until the internet itself geta faster than that. [It runs about 1mbps right now.])
The suggestions about turning on the wireless switch on the laptop are the first ones I’d follow.
if the router is 802.11g/n compatible or less you can do a firmware upgrade to bring it upto todays standards, just ask dlink or log onto their website, either way it should provide you with internet, try a reset of router and modem , turn power off for 30 seconds or so, then plug one in at a time let it power up then do the other, let it power up, and see how you go, failing that plug modem direct into laptop and see if you get internet? If the router can’t be upgraded then you may have to buy a new one?
