Does anyone know how this kind of virtualization works?
I was at a computer shop the other day and the owner was explaining to me that you can now take a pc because they are so fast these days and divide it into up to 32 different parts (effectively becoming a server) and then you can take this small device and plug it into the network and just plug a mouse, monitor, and keyboard to it and it somehow connects to the server and runs like it is the server. I thought about this and I just couldn’t help but think how greta this could be. I mean first of all 1 expensive pc is for sure a lot cheaper than several cheap ones. More than that though because on the server the processor is always working as opposed to your pc that just one person uses the processor so it makes it run more efficiently. What I mean is that like for example one of the most cumbersome tasks on a pc is to restart, but you don’t do it that often so most likely the person that restarts his pc is going to be able to get most of the cpu’s speed since most people are just typing which doesn’t eat up so much speed.
So I guess I would like to know where could I find out more about this technology. I am not interested in a situation where you need a pc. I want information on those little boxes and how they work.

For pointers read this

VMWare Server 2.0 is free. You can try it on your own computer (if you have enough memory).
The little boxes he means are called "thin clients".
