can someone give me some direction with a technical career?
I just graduated from a state college with computer information science degree, and I need some direction forward. I will enjoy anything technology related, so the main question is which skills are most needed today ( and in the next few years)? I am very confident in my ability to pick up a book or online tutorial and learn new things, I just don’t know which direction to go in. please help me clarify things. thanks

Programming is a good direction; I would recommend mastering C# and Java, plus a scripting language (like perl), don’t forget your UNIX (shell scripts and the like) and more than anything at all, MASTER YOUR SQL! The best industry right now is the Pharmaceutical sector, and everything they do is storage related (look up LIMS in Wikipedia to find out more).
If you’re less inclined to do heavy duty coding (as described above), your number one friend will be mastering Ajax and the open source toolkits that use them (like Dojo & Prototype). Ajax is everywhere and utterly essential for any interface in the world of the "Rich Internet"
Good luck!
Did you learn any programming? If so, and if that won’t drive you mad, look for junior programming jobs. All major companies need programmers. The telephone companies, banks, retail outlets, hell, just about anybody that needs some proprietary software to run their business will have on-site/in-company IT people. So I’d look for a junior position and go from there. You can always get experience from one place and then move on in a few years if a higher paying gig becomes available. I’d scour your local craigslist to start.
Id look at what jobs incorporate my current qualifications or have major credits towards and also look at the lifestyle of the job i.e. income range six or more figures is always great and easily attainable through furthur education, work responsibilites whether it would be something I would love to do until I retire. If there was a job I was only partially qualified in and I liked it I would furthur my education to attain the job.
