Is AOL past its prime………?

I know, I know, it is internet with training wheels but a lot of less tech savvy people I know like its features. However, my friend has spent all day on the phone with AOL after it locked up her brand new computer causing a white out condition. This has happened four or five times and all they can do is recommend a different version or a reinstall of Java which never works. Two or three months of stable use is all she has ever gotten out of it. I don’t think that AOL is keeping up with today’s technology.

Why would one pay for service that uses proprietary software/gateway that is flooded with advertisements?
