If you plan on upgrading, motherboards that support ATI’s "crossfire" architecture allow you to run upto FOUR *identical* ATI video cards in one machine, whereas GeForce SLI only allows a maximum of two *identical* videocards to run in parallel.
That may be a "pro" in favor of ATI, but I find the ATI drivers more flakey, and you’re not going to find much software that supports for *four* video cards. And by the time you can afford four cards, ATI will sell a single card that outperforms them for less money.
Two GeForce cards in an SLI motherboard is a more practical option, with more support. But, once again, you must weigh the cost/benefit of buying additional cards over just upgrading.
If your motherboard only has one PCI-X slot, base your card choice on any other video hardware you may have or plan to get. (ie: if you have an ATI TV card, it will work best with an ATI video card).
Visit "Tom’s Hardware Guide" (tomshardware.com) for video comparison charts of the latest cards.
In my opinion the GTX 280 is a waste of money because no games require that much memory for a graphics card, but if you have enough money to waste on a card like that go for it.
