My uncle is planning on getting windows 7, and i want to know if i can just borrow his copy and install it onto my computer. I’ve heard the "1 copy for 3 machines" rule from Microsoft before, but will it work for windows 7?

You or your uncle will need to purchase a Windows 7 family pack to upgrade multiple computers. You can purchase a family pack or an individual upgrade here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/shop.

You can buy as a single or a family pack
Actually you can only install it on one system, while the three pack user family size it’s three. Installing more than once will blacklist your key and it won’t update.
You could use his disc to install but you’ll need your own key to maintain activation.
If you want three copies you need to buy the family pack.
