How do I set my Xbox 360 up to play through my surround sound?

I have my Xbox 360 hooked up to my Sony TV via HDMI cable and my Sony TV hooked up to my Sony 5.1 surround sound via the optical port but am still not getting surround sound out of it while the Xbox is playing. Is there something that I need to re-route or do I just have something backwards.
