My MacBook was dropped. It turns on, the chime sounds as normal, but it stays stuck on the gray screen.

I am not yet sure what the problem is (suggestions are welcome!), but if it is a hard-drive problem and I need data recovery, would the technicians see exactly what content I have saved on my hard drive?
My laptop is password-protected, and all I want is to be able to get to the screen where I can log in.
