I am looking to build a new desktop computer (waiting now because of the Thailand floods) and was wondering what kind of storage is going to be needed with a TV tuner card. The reason for the tuner card is that i do not want to pay for an extra box and the DVR plan from my service provider. I want to be able to record the shows i want and then be able to access them from anywhere.
It system will also be used as a backup and ftp server for use of those people in my household. I also do virtual machines when trying out new software or creating a program for different OSes
the backups for my laptop and my dying desktop already about 500GB
im planning on:
the ceton infiniTV 4 or a lower priced tv tuner — i can deal with not recording HBO and other cable channels if needed
mid to high range AMD or Nvidia graphics card preferably sli or crossfireX capable
40 – 64 GB SSD for the OS
8 – 16 gb of ram (probably going to do 16 for virtualization and gaming)
originally i was thinking of doing 2 drives either 2TB or 3TB for all the storage but i dont know if i should do go with 3 drives considering ceton recommends 350GB for 50 hrs and i dont know how often i will be able to keep up with the shows because of school (college student)

hi,
i want to use a service like mozy (mozy.com), for my web servers/mysql dbs
mozy is for home computers, but you just simply say what files you want backing up and it uploads it to their servers. i want something like this, but, as said, for my web servers.
(and i want another company to do it, don’t want to keep back ups on my own computers/my other servers)
Hi,
thanks for the suggestion regarding the usb hdd. i don’t want to download it myself though (quite a lot of gb), prefer another computer take care of it all for me.

I’m from Barbados, and I’m currently visiting New York City. I want to buy an Apple iPad, but I had heard somewhere that if I am not going to be using it in the US (I want to take it home with me to Barbados) that I could be exempt from paying taxes on it. This would be really great if it is possible.
Could it happen? I called the Apple Store on 5th Avenue last night, and the clerk said that she wasn’t sure. What do you know about this?
I don’t necessarily have to buy it from the Apple Store — Do any other stores like Best Buy or something do this as well? Would I be exempt from paying the tax if I am not living here?
