iPhone and prepaid plans?

Is there anyway I can buy an iPhone and use a prepaid plan on it? Even if it’s AT&T’s Pay as You Go? Does the iPhone have to be unlocked or something?

I currently have an iTouch right now and love it to death. The only thing is that, I have another phone through Virgin Mobile, and I’ve had it for a couple years now and it’s really getting old. Since I heard that the iPhone has great battery life, and can do everything an iTouch can do with texting and calling, I was going to sell my iTouch and buy an iPhone with it. However, I checked the prices for the plans on AT&T and the cheapest you can do is like a month! WHAT THE HELL?!

For a person like me, who doesn’t use calling at all (perhaps 10 minutes every 5 months?) but needs unlimited data and texting, prepaid tends to work out best for me. Once you put your money from the card you put on, you can buy little packages, like, for unlimited texting. I’m hoping that there’s a unlimited data pack, too.

Anyways, is there a way I can use the iPhone on a prepaid plan like that? I read around, and saw that it’s possible and all you have to do is unlock it and put a pay as you go simcard in there…Is it true? Is there anyone else who has done this?

Thank you very much.

Folks, I meant "technology wise old", but they are in really excellent condition. They work just fine, but they are so bulky for these days. I did not want just throw away, since we paid big bucks for them right before today’s high technology burst. I checked on ebay about the possibility of selling them. Almost not worth to spend time & money to list. Is there any other way I can donate somewhere or get a few bucks for them? I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you all.
