storage needed for home theater pc / server?

I am looking to build a new desktop computer (waiting now because of the Thailand floods) and was wondering what kind of storage is going to be needed with a TV tuner card. The reason for the tuner card is that i do not want to pay for an extra box and the DVR plan from my service provider. I want to be able to record the shows i want and then be able to access them from anywhere.

It system will also be used as a backup and ftp server for use of those people in my household. I also do virtual machines when trying out new software or creating a program for different OSes

the backups for my laptop and my dying desktop already about 500GB

im planning on:

the ceton infiniTV 4 or a lower priced tv tuner — i can deal with not recording HBO and other cable channels if needed

mid to high range AMD or Nvidia graphics card preferably sli or crossfireX capable

40 – 64 GB SSD for the OS

8 – 16 gb of ram (probably going to do 16 for virtualization and gaming)

originally i was thinking of doing 2 drives either 2TB or 3TB for all the storage but i dont know if i should do go with 3 drives considering ceton recommends 350GB for 50 hrs and i dont know how often i will be able to keep up with the shows because of school (college student)

Lenovo vs Sony vs Asus?

Hi Friends. I wish to purchase a personal laptop. I choosed Dell when my brother asked me to purchased one for him & even after 3yrs yet he’s very satisfied with it, in all terms. I too got an ASUS 1yr back & requested moneyback since it had frequent problems. Though ASUS too was good.

For now I wish to purchase one for a bit LONG TERM. My concerns are :
1) DURABLE & RELIABLE hardware
2) STABLE & COOL under multi-tasking
3) Gaming (FarCry2 & GTA IV)
4) Serious Youtubing & Torrent Downloading
5) Virtualization.

I’m gonna run it breakfree for major part of the day. (I Love ThinkPads but dont wish to purchase now). I’m messed up with Lenovo (best brand 2010-11), Sony (remained just cool even after 48hr of my usage) & to some percent with ASUS (I used it continuously without restarting it even once for 5days). Plz help me to which brand should I stand with on the given grounds.

Moreover in short pl add Core i3 or Core i5 & AMD vs NVIDIA for the same. Thx alot
