i built a custom basic desktop, with reasonable upgrade options, in case i were to use it for hi-def editing and high system and video memory applications like games.

purchased in mumbai, india, in april 2010 .. just a circle cabinet , gigabyte mobo and amd processor.. n lg dvd writer, 500gb wd sata hdd …very economical, yet fully upgradeable.

Mobo : Gigabyte GA – MA785GMT-US2H micro atx –
ddr3 upto 1666mhz (was using 1333mhz 2gb ddr3 single stick) expandable upto 16 gb
dual bios
256mb shared video memory ati radeon 4200
os.. w7 ultimate., linux ubuntu, mint and other distros..

Processor : amd phenom ii x2 550 … 2 cores, both on hyperthreading (not the black edition, i got a mid range one, capable of virtualisation..,i just wanted a working computer :D … i expected an atom processor.. nothing more..)
this processor can also be jailbroken to give you a quad core… never needed to try that either..

usb mouse, keyboard… and an analog tv tuner card..

it has esata, firewire, usb 2.0, ps2. ide, sata @ 3Gbps, is power efficient.. blah blah…

clock speed of processor 3.2 GHz,overclockable to 3.4Ghz in the bios.. no extra work needed… but never bothered to use it.. my previous comp was an athlon xp.. at 899MHz.. single core, no hyperthreading i guess.. and 256 mb ddr1 ram.. added 512 later.. while beta testing windows 7… in 2008 end i guess.. downloaded about 4 different beta builds.. 736 mb ram was "a dream" … 2gb and a dual core was heaven.. for 7 months..

anyway.. the thing over heated or something.. shut off every 5 or so hours.. not a software issue.. but i guess i over used it.,.. was on sometimes for days together, no special cooling,.. just basic cheap fans…
later, after some idiot used windows 7 startup repair… it ran for 4 hours…..windows 7 wasnt booting up…at all linux mint liveusb was.. but even that kept shutting down.. after a few hours.. so, i remembered that i hadnt put much thermal paste on the processor.. and took it out.. put some paste.. put it back in.. didnt work any longer… checked manuals, tech support, and youtube.. but this time, i’ll go the common man’s way.. not the geeky jailbreakers’

the last time i saw it.. it was in the bios(cmos i guess..)(75 degrees after 5mins of bios(or cmos) time.. and a night of being off..i knew it was a cooling issue.. i put a huge external fan.. 9 inches diameter… tried that.,. but couldnt stand the noise.. so opened up the cabinet, took the processor out.. put on the paste after youtube video tutorials.. but kind of put it in harshly.. a pin got bent.. i took it to a local guy who attempted to fix it.. broke a few pins.. i made a few attempts later myself and bent a few more… those novices suggested that i go to amd and fake a warranty claim.. what do i do now? ive tried many places.. they all either tell me to fake the warranty claim.. or buy a new processor…

so, new processor..

what are all my choices? from the cheapest ever to the priciest ever.

single core no hyperthreading to hexa/octacore (if that even exists)
socket am3.. ddr3 support..(if related.)

about 20 pins are bent, one is absent on the processor..

Thanks.

Recently my Droid Incredible has been just shutting off whenever I try to do stuff. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s sure annoying when it does! Anybody else have this problem?
